A short walkthrough of the steps between your first post and a working lane: account setup, how threads and depot contacts are organised, what moderators expect from new members, and the practical limits on what this forum can and cannot answer.
Onboarding timeline
Nothing here happens in one sitting. Most people join with a single stuck shipment, read for a week, then start asking about the routes they run every month. The steps below are the order things usually go, and roughly how long each one takes.
Account and lane
You set up a profile and list the lanes you actually move: Durban to Gauteng, Walvis Bay to Johannesburg, Cape Town imports, or whatever your week looks like. This is what routes your first replies. Vague profiles get vague answers, so be specific about ports, container types and how often you ship.
Reading before posting
Most questions about SAD 500 fields, groupage versus full container and Durban berthing delays have been answered before. We ask new members to search first, because the older threads carry the depot contacts and transit times that never made it into a rate sheet.
First post
The threads that get useful replies include the basics: commodity, tariff heading if you have one, container size, port pair and the date you need release. Members who clear their own customs paperwork will usually tell you where the declaration is likely to snag before you submit it.
Building trust
When a carrier, depot or broker performs well or badly, say so. Honest follow-ups are what keep the carrier reviews worth reading. Members who only ask and never report tend to get fewer answers over time.
Limits to keep in mind
We do not act as your customs broker, we do not file declarations, and we cannot guarantee a berthing window or a trucking slot. Advice here comes from people moving boxes weekly, and it is worth checking against your own broker before you commit cargo.
Clarifications
A few terms get used loosely in freight talk, and that causes arguments in threads. Here is how we read them on this forum, so replies stay useful and nobody has to guess what the other person meant.
Groupage
A shared container where your cargo sits alongside other shippers' boxes. It is not the same as a small FCL, and the release date depends on every co-loaded consignment clearing, not just yours.
Clearance
When members say "cleared", they mean the SAD 500 has been accepted and release is issued. Duty paid is a separate step, and a release note is not a delivery order.
Transit time
Port-to-port sailing days only, unless the poster says otherwise. Berthing, depot queues and inland trucking to Johannesburg or Cape Town are counted separately.
Carrier review
First-hand experience on a specific lane and period. Second-hand complaints, rate screenshots without context, and agent promotion get removed.
Tariff question
A request for how others classified similar goods. It is not a binding ruling, and no reply here replaces a formal determination from customs.
Depot contact
Shared as a starting point for your own checks. Confirm storage terms, cut-off times and handling fees directly before you commit cargo to any yard.
